Community Members

Healthy Minds | Healthy Campuses (HM|HC) is a Community of Practice (CoP) that has engaged campus members from across British Columbia. Community members include: student service professionals and other staff, students, faculty and administrators. All community members share the common goal of promoting campus mental health and healthier relationships with substances at BC colleges, universities and institutes. Members range in their level of involvement from supporters to sharers, developers and active agenda setters, depending on their interests and availability over time. Community members share their own experiences, discuss strategies they have tried, consider new ideas and share resources. HM|HC facilitates dialogue and action among members of the Community of Practice and is keen to work with government partners and community organizations supportive of campus-based initiatives. When you join our community, you gain access to a network of people across the province!

As the first provincial community of practice initiative in Canada working to promote campus mental health and healthier relationships with substances, HM|HC has happily engaged with colleagues from outside BC. Although our initiative is BC-funded, BC-based and BC-focused, a number of other post-secondary institutions elsewhere across Canada have been part of the community’s discussions and contributed alongside us in broader collaborative efforts. Given the success of our community of practice, we are pleased to acknowledge that HM|HC has helped seed initiatives in other parts of the country to enhance capacity and support mental health and well-being on campus. These include Centre for Innovation in Campus Mental Health in Ontario (2013), Healthy Campus Alberta in that province (2015) and Association of Atlantic Universities (AAU) Healthy Campuses in the Maritime region (2015). Over the years here in BC, HM|HC from its beginnings as the Campus Project in 2004 has been served at different stages and times by an Advisory Group, a Design Team and various Summit Planning groups. An eager group of Student Leaders and Recent Alumni has also contributed to our community. Besides drawing on those bodies, a succession of Coordinators has been first assisted and then followed by a Support Team. It has been composed of personnel from two agencies (CMHA BC Division and CISUR) contributing on behalf of the BC Partners for Mental Health and Substance Use Information, initiators of the venture. HM|HC now has its own Leadership Committee alongside the secretarial Support Team.

Community Friends

Healthy Minds | Healthy Campuses recognizes that various agencies not campus-based are keen to support mental health in the post-secondary setting. The community of practice welcomes collaboration with such friends who are willing to come alongside and work in a concerted manner with local campuses to promote well-being in ways that are consistent with HM|HC commitments and appropriate for specific contexts of opportunity and need. HM|HC also appreciates the work of campus-based communities of practice or networks elsewhere in Canada and beyond engaged in comparable initiatives to improve mental health and relate to substance use issues in the post-secondary context. HM|HC values dialogue, knowledge exchange and fruitful collaborative efforts with such groups, grateful for both occasions of learning from them and opportunities to contribute to their advancement.
