Over the past five years, SFU health peers have been hosting monthly cooking workshops for international students that not only teach nutrition and culinary skills, but also promote conversations and connections that help ease the students into university life in Canada.
The workshop recipe has proven so successful that SFU Health and Counselling wants to share it with other universities in a lunch-hour webinar on July 19, noon-1 p.m.
“International students face unique barriers as they transition into university, often feeling isolated from their community, friends and familiar foods back home,” says Rosie Dhaliwal, health promotion specialist, SFU Health & Counselling.
“Our Community Cooking Workshops are a dinner table of sorts where students can chat about their experiences adjusting to life in Canada and at SFU.”
During the workshops students also receive training in positive body image and food safety. And when their dinner table conversations turn to issues around stress and resilience, alcohol use and sexual health, the health peers are there to offer resources and advice.
